Northern Lights Forecast for Oulu

On strong nights, yes. Oulu photographer Thomas Kast says a big display can be seen even beside the Toripolliisi statue on the market square. For anything weaker, step onto Elba island next to the square, or walk the 3.5 km waterfront path to Nallikari, where the beach faces the open sea and the city is behind you.

Oulu photographer Thomas Kast estimates 40 to 50 nights a year, more in some years than others. The aurora appears over Oulu on ordinary active nights, not only in storms, and the limit is usually cloud rather than activity: September to October and February to March are the most productive months, and midwinter is often overcast.

By road. The island is about 50 km west of the city and is reached over a causeway and bridges, so there is no ferry or ice road to time. It is flat, with about 900 people and very little artificial light, and the road runs 30 km across it to the Marjaniemi lighthouse at the western tip, which puts the whole northern half of the sky over water.

Rovaniemi is about 220 km north, on the Arctic Circle, a degree and a half of latitude further into the aurora zone and with a tourism trade built around it. Oulu is a city of 217,000, where the aurora is still common in season but you drive 25 minutes to Koiteli or about an hour to Hailuoto to get out of the glow. Both are on the same railway, so a trip can take in both.

In Oulu, you usually need at least Kp 2 to have a reasonable chance of seeing the northern lights. Lower Kp can still bring a faint aurora display low on the northern horizon, but it is less common.

This is based on magnetic latitude, and Kp index is a global geomagnetic index, so treat it as a rule of thumb, not a location-specific guarantee.

Tonight, the NOAA Kp index forecast is 1 to 2.6. That is around the usual Kp index threshold for Oulu, so you might have a chance of seeing the aurora if the sky is clear and dark.
