The Northernmost Aurora Destination in Finland

Utsjoki isn’t just another stop in Lapland; it is the northernmost municipality in Finland and the entire European Union. Sitting at nearly 70 degrees north, this is the “true North” where the landscape shifts from the dense forests of the south to the vast, open tundra and rolling fells. Because of its extreme latitude, Utsjoki sits directly under the auroral oval, making it one of the most reliable places on the planet to witness the Northern Lights.

While many travelers stop at Rovaniemi or Ivalo, pushing further north to Utsjoki rewards you with a significant statistical advantage. In Utsjoki, the aurora is visible on average four out of every five clear nights.

Why Utsjoki is the “Aurora Capital”

The geography here is uniquely suited for aurora hunting. Unlike the coastal regions of neighboring Norway, which often struggle with maritime cloud cover, Utsjoki’s inland position and high fells often provide clearer skies.

  • Minimal Light Pollution: With a population density of only 0.25 people per square kilometer, artificial light is practically non-existent outside the small village centers. You can often see the lights dancing just by stepping out of your cottage door.
  • The Polar Night (Kaamos): From late November to mid-January, the sun does not rise above the horizon. This extended darkness provides a massive window for aurora viewing, sometimes starting as early as 4:00 PM.
  • Kp 0 Visibility: Even when solar activity is low (Kp 1 or 2), the lights are frequently visible here as faint green arcs or curtains because the town is so far north.

Best Viewing Spots in Utsjoki

If you are staying in the area, you don’t need to drive for hours to find a dark spot. Here are the local favorites:

  • The Teno River (Tenojoki): This massive river forms the border between Finland and Norway. In winter, it freezes solid, creating a wide, flat, and perfectly dark corridor with an unobstructed view of the northern horizon.
  • Ailigás Fells: There are three fells named Ailigás in the region, which are considered sacred in Sámi culture. The one overlooking Utsjoki village offers a high-altitude vantage point that puts you above any low-lying mist.
  • Nuorgam: A short drive east takes you to Nuorgam, the northernmost village in Finland. The road between Utsjoki and Nuorgam (Route 970) is often cited as the most beautiful road in Finland, hugging the river and offering plenty of dark pull-offs for photographers.

Local Life and Attractions

Utsjoki is the only municipality in Finland where the majority of the population is Sámi. This gives the area a distinct cultural feel compared to the more commercialized parts of southern Lapland.

Between aurora sessions, you can visit the Utsjoki Parish Huts, a collection of historic wooden buildings by Lake Mantojärvi that date back to the 18th century. For those seeking true wilderness, the Kevo Strict Nature Reserve and the Kaldoaivi Wilderness Area surround the region, offering some of the most rugged hiking and snowshoeing terrain in the country.

Getting There

Most visitors fly into Ivalo (IVL) and then take the two-hour drive north along the E75 highway. The drive itself is a highlight, passing through the vast wilderness of northern Lapland. While remote, Utsjoki is well-connected by road, and the local holiday villages are experts at hosting aurora hunters.
