Northern Lights in Canada
Seeing the Northern Lights in Canada
Canada spans a massive portion of the northern hemisphere, with a large part of its landmass situated beneath the auroral oval. Because of the country’s sheer size, the landscapes and viewing experiences vary significantly depending on which province or territory you choose to visit.
Where to Go
While the lights can occasionally be seen near the southern border during strong solar storms, the northern and central regions offer much more consistent viewing opportunities.
- Northwest Territories: The area around Yellowknife sits on the edge of Great Slave Lake. The relatively flat, subarctic terrain here provides unobstructed views of the horizon, making it easier to spot the lights even when activity is lower.
- Yukon: Near Whitehorse, the northern lights typically appear over boreal forests and mountain ridges. Many visitors to this region combine their evening aurora tracking with daytime visits to the local hot springs or exploring the area’s Gold Rush history.
- Manitoba: Located on the shores of Hudson Bay, Churchill offers dark skies over the open tundra. It is also a frequent stop for tourists looking to observe polar bears in the autumn or beluga whales in the late summer.
- Alberta: Further south, the dark sky preserves in Banff and Jasper national parks provide a rugged backdrop of the Canadian Rockies. Because these parks are at a lower latitude, the aurora needs to be more active to be seen clearly, but the mountain silhouettes make for an interesting landscape when the lights do appear.
Viewing Season
The typical aurora season across Canada runs from late August through April.
Late summer and early autumn (September and October) offer the chance to see the northern lights reflecting off unfrozen lakes before the winter ice sets in. The mid-winter months bring much longer hours of darkness, which extends the daily viewing window, while the spring months often bring slightly clearer skies depending on the specific region.
